Detroit Education and Research

When was our local union created?

On June 4th, 2024 resident physicians and fellows employed by Detroit Education & Research and working at Detroit Medical Center hospitals successfully voted 508-8 in a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) election to unionize. Our union, the Alliance of Resident Physicians (ARP), is affiliated with AFT Michigan/AFT/AFL-CIO.

Why is Detroit Education and Research (DER) challenging our election results?

Tenet continues to disrespect residents and fellows by making frivolous legal challenges to our election results to delay the NLRB from certifying the union and ultimately avoiding their legal duty to bargain with our union. Much like their attempts to suppress voting rights for residents and fellows, the tactics of DER aim to obstruct the democratic process, distract residents and fellows from workplace issues, and delay the start of collective bargaining. While this is a predictable strategy, they can remind us all why we aim to form a union in the first place.

Who are my workplace representatives?

The following individuals were elected as the Interim Executive Committee to lead the DER bargaining unit of ARP:

  1. Justin Bria (General Surgery) — President of ARP DER Chapter
  2. Kendel Ridgeway (Pediatrics) — Vice President of ARP DER Chapter
  3. James Ridgeway (Anesthesia) — Secretary of ARP DER Chapter
